Why take vitamin D?

Vitamin D is involved in numerous processes in the body.

  1. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function.
  2. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of healthy teeth.
  3. Vitamin D contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system.
  4. Vitamin D plays a significant role in the process of cell division.
  5. Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption/utilization of calcium and phosphorus.
  6. Vitamin D contributes to normal calcium levels in the blood.
  7. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of healthy bones.

Why take vitamin K together with vitamin D?

Vitamin K helps maintain healthy bones by directing calcium to the right places in the body. It is vitamin D that makes sure calcium is absorbed. In other words, vitamin D acts as a 'gatekeeper', ensuring that calcium is transported and allowed to enter the body, while vitamin K ensures that calcium does not build up in the arteries.

Vitamins D and K in Food

There is minimal vitamin D present in food. Significant amounts can be found in fish oil, fatty fish, liver, and egg yolks. Plant-based foods, for the most part, lack vitamin D.

Vitamin K is abundant in green leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and cabbage. It is also plentiful in the liver and is produced by intestinal bacteria. Foods rich in vitamin K include fermented foods.

Vitamin D deficiency

The deficiency of vitamin D is a common problem that can occur in various age groups, particularly in areas with less sunlight. Vitamin D is crucial for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the body, essential for maintaining the health of bones and teeth. Lack of this vitamin can lead to numerous health problems, including osteoporosis, muscle weakness, and, in some cases, even depression.

Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are often subtle or general, making them challenging to identify. Among the most common symptoms are fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness or cramps, and mood changes. People who spend a lot of time indoors, the elderly, individuals with darker skin tones, and those who avoid sunlight should be particularly attentive to possible vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency often occurs in the fall and winter months when sunlight exposure is reduced. During this time, it is advisable to increase the intake of this vitamin through supplements or vitamin D-rich foods, such as fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods.

For an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment of vitamin D deficiency, it is important to consult with a doctor who can prescribe blood tests and the necessary therapy. Timely intervention and prevention are crucial for maintaining good health and preventing the long-term consequences of vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin K deficiency

Vitamin K2 deficiency is less well known, but no less important for our health. Vitamin K2 plays a key role in regulating calcium in the body, which is essential for bone health and preventing calcification of soft tissues such as blood vessels and kidneys. A deficiency of this vitamin can lead to osteoporosis and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Symptoms of vitamin K2 deficiency are often vague and may manifest as impaired wound healing, easy bruising or bleeding gums. As vitamin K2 is essential for the proper functioning of many proteins in the body, its deficiency can affect a variety of bodily functions.

Vitamin K2 deficiency is more common in people who eat a low-fat diet, as vitamin K2 is fat-soluble and naturally found in fatty foods such as fermented dairy products, liver, egg yolks and some types of meat. People taking certain medications such as anticoagulants may also be at higher risk of vitamin K2 deficiency. To prevent vitamin K2 deficiency, it is advisable to eat a balanced diet rich in fatty foods containing this vitamin. In some cases, dietary supplements may also be necessary, especially for people with certain medical conditions or those taking medications that affect vitamin K2 metabolism.

As always, it is advisable to consult a doctor or nutritionist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment of vitamin K2 deficiency. A proper balance of vitamin K2 is essential for maintaining the health of bones and the entire cardiovascular system.
